Elmley National Nature Reserve, Isle of Sheppey, Kent

JDA recently completed the renovation and extension of Kingshill Farmhouse, a Grade II listed building on the Elmley National Nature Reserve on the Isle of Sheppey to provide tourism and residential facilities as part of the diversification of the business. The main house, unoccupied for several years, was in urgent need of remedial work. The design focus on retaining the original features as well as providing a sensitive ground floor extension and additional accommodation on the second floor.

Prior to the conversion of the Farm House we undertook a feasibility of the wider site to access other potential locations to provide tourist facilities.  The site has a rich history; King James II, the son of Charles I was imprisoned here whilst trying to flee to France in 1688 and most of the reserve is a Special Area of Scientific Interest so any proposals had to be highly sensitive to the unique location.  Following the feasibility Planning Permission has also been obtained for a new building in the adjacent courtyard that will be used for events and conferences as well as educational visits and overnight stays.
