Elmley Old Stables, Isle of Sheppey, Kent

JDA was commissioned to undertake a feasibility study for a number for potential sites across the reserve on the Isle of Sheppey to assess their suitability to provide tourism and residential facilities as part of the diversification of the business. This new building, which represents Phase Two of the masterplan, is located in the farm courtyard and will be used for events and conferences as well as educational visits and overnight stays. The site has a rich history; King James II, the son of Charles I was imprisoned here whilst trying to flee to France in 1688 and most of the reserve is a Special Area of Scientific Interest. The form of the highly sustainable building is designed to maximise views across the reserve while respecting the Grade II listed wall to the south. While contemporary, the building is highly contextual referencing the materials on the surrounding buildings, grounding it in this highly sensitive and unique location.

Planning Permission has been obtained for this phase and construction to renovate and extend the adjacent Grade II listed Kingshill Farmhouse was completed in early 2019.
